What's there to know about wood?
Wood is available all around us in the form of trees, and your furniture item is made from several pieces of wood, each perhaps from a different part of a tree. Which is why you may find variation in colour, grain patterns and the number of knots (areas from where a limb once grew) in any one furniture item. Grain patterns seen in wood are related to the tree's growth rings.

Do different trees give different wood? Each species of tree provides us with a unique type of wood. Some of the more popular ones used in Lexus furniture are:
Oriental Console
Pine - a lightweight, straight grained softwood found in most areas of the Northern Hemisphere, that resists shrinking or swelling.
It is a soft wood species and it is most suited for concealed, painted and other parts. A wide range of different Pine timbers is available.
The wood colour varies from almost whitish through shades of yellow and pink, while prominent growth rings are visible. the grain of most Pines is usually straight, while some varieties are resinous. The resin may have an effect on the finishing surfaces.

Rosewood - a dark red or brown-coloured hardwood from tropical trees, this timber derives its name from the attractive fragrance of fresh sawn wood. Being rather rare, it is mainly used for decorative purposes. It can be distinguished by a firm lustre and silver lines that are created after polishing with Chinese Tang Oil.

Teak - a heavy, yellow to dark-brown hardwood from Southeast Asia.
Genuine teak is found in Burma and is sold as Rangoon Teak, or depending upon the area in which it is grown. An authentic species is also found in the central provinces of Nagpur, India. It is popularly known as CP Teak or Nagpur Teak.
When freshly cut, Teak is golden-brown in colour, and darkens considerably after prolonged exposure to air. It may show a figure of darker streaks. While its grain is straight, the texture is moderately coarse, and the wood has a mildly pungent, distinctive smell.
Rack Rubber Wood - a light cream coloured, medium density timber, with a smooth surface that can be stained in any colour. Available in South India and North East India.

Haldu - (also known as Kwao) a species of wood common in India, and most suited for creating the smaller parts that are carved or turned.
Finely textured, it is of a uniform, yellowish color. Possessing an invariably straight grain, it is strong, can be worked easily, stains evenly and gets polished well.

Hollock Wood - (also known as Assam Teak) a light-yellow to light-brown wood, it is commonly available in the North-East of India (Assam). Having no distinct grains, it can be worked well. After seasoning to impart added strength, it is a good substitute for Teak Wood.

Mango Wood - like Hollock, Mango Wood is also a replacement for expensive hardwoods, as it has similar properties, such as workability, etc. After proper seasoning and treatment, it can be compared with Teak Wood. It does have a light-brown, textured grain pattern, though the grains are not as defined as in Teak.

Kikar - a thorny tree that flourishes in arid and desert areas of India, it is a hard wood with good working properties after seasoning and treatment. Its figure is decorative, resembling Teak Wood, and is strong and long lasting.
